Social Justice

At the right of this page is a spinning globe. It is a pretty cool graphic I think. You really get the sense that you are watching the world spin by. The continents, the oceans, and of course you can imagine the people that are inhabiting the earth. The graphic makes it all seem though easy. The blues are a clean blue, the greens are a healthy green and the feeling is that there is no problem going on there.

But there is. The oceans are not that clean, the land is not only green and the people aren't always getting along in sing song fashion. There is something wrong happening. Call it sin, call it evil, call it bad karma, call it what you will but do admit something is out of balance.

Some of the effects of this unbalance are. . .

35,000 children starving to death a day

people driving million dollar cars

unclean water coming out of the well

palatial suburbs

people living in garbage dumps in Manila

and the list goes on. . . . . So what are you gonna do??

The issues of social justice are huge. Our advice. First, mind your own business. What do we mean? The consequences you can control the best are the circumstances under your control, right?? The food you eat, the money you spend, the people you interact with. Try to make informed choices about the things that go on in your little world. Use transportation that saves energy, eat foods that are healthy an in season in your area, know what happens to your garbage, recycle whatever you can, buy socially responsible products, travel responsibly, etc.

Second, be informed. You don't need to know everything. Just learn little by little. You can accomplish this by simply reading the daily newspaper. By reading the newspaper you can learn what is going on in the world and how things fit together.

Probably there are some things that you(and we) can do live in a way that is more aware of the environment and people around us. You don't need to tackle everything at once. Just think about your daily routine and you daily actions. What negative effects could you see coming from them? Where might your way of living be harming the environment or the people who inhabit this earth? If you just concentrate on one thing at a time you won't be overwhelmed and you will be pleased to know that you are doing something good.

Here are a few helpful websites that focus on individual actions and effects.
