One of the ideas that is reinforced by nearly everyone I talk to is the importance of tapping into the “felt needs” of the community. Programs should be developed around the places where the community is frustrated, stressed, or angry, rather than on needs that we, as outsiders, see and want to fix. Therefore, we should approach the community first and foremost as learner rather than teacher. As I think about my initial months in Muskegon, I realize that mine will be a role of listener and learner. There is a history that I must root myself in; there are people from whom I must gain respect and trust; there is a culture into which I must dive and soak myself. All of this must happen before I can hear and understand the felt needs of the community in Muskegon. Please pray for me as I continue the learning process in Grand Rapids: although it has been good to see and hear from so many people involved with community development in Grand Rapids, it is sometimes hard for me to see clearly where the knowledge will be transferable to my work with Applewood Community Ministries. I look forward to the time when Dan and I can sink our feet into Muskegon’s soil! We are planning to move around mid to late October. If you have any questions about Applewood Community Ministries or my
work there, please drop me an email. |
