Into / Out of Country

·   We could fly into Bali or Jakarta, latest costs are…

·   Into Jakarta from LAX is about $1000 (US) on August 23, 2001 with one stop in Hong Kong http://www.orbitz.com/

·   Travel time is about 24 hours

·   No Visas, 60 day tourist pass, not extendable, need to show proof of plans to leave country (plane ticket out) and sometimes $1000 per person.

·   Out at Medan via a Ferry to Malaysia

Bike Trip

·   Mr. Pumpy’s trip was in little of the areas where we will be going (Java and Sumatra).  I think between Lonely Planet and the Map I will be able to establish a good route. 

·   Ferry to Pedang then 14 day bike trip to Medan via Danau Toba, go to Bukit Lawang Orang-utang Sanctuary before Medan

·   Lots of Mountains

·   Could take bus for part of the trip.

·   I would love to go to Mt. Bromo first, we could fly into Jakarta and then fly/boat to Surabaya and fly/boat to Pedang, would be too much time on a boat or cost too much to fly though.

Costs

·   Currency is the Rupiah.  Currently $1 US = 8000 Rp

·   We will be in the country for about 18 days

·   $8 a day is the budget cost.

Major Attractions

·   Mt. Bromo, Java (Surabuyato to Malang) East Java, how will we get there to start

·   Komodo Dragon too far away – too bad, Deb was looking forward to trying not to get eaten alive

·   Danau Toba– biggest lake in SE Asia with  large island culture in the middle

·   Bukit Lawang (Rain Forest) (No Aech see below) – orangutans and other wildlife

·   Yoggakarta – Historical Capital

Current News

Aech is not safe and travel in not advised to many regions as Goseasia says; we could end up in a war zone!

After September 11 there some people in cities were harassed and rounded up and had to leave, Sumatra seems to be one of the better places though.  The Muslims that are there are considered “casual Muslims”
