Development Work

Our study, and our travels, have taught us that there different people all over the world. We have noticed though that a major difference between people is their standard of living. We grew up in middle class American, and Canadian homes, and took all the comforts of life there as necessities. But this assumption of normal is about as far from normal as you can get. The norm for a large percentage of the world's population is a lack of even the true necessities. We want to do something about that.

To want do something about this disparity is not all that radical. But we want to make it our career. Overcoming disparities seems easy and pretty straight forward, doesn't it. I mean, you just see what the needs are and then eliminate them. Right?? It is not that simple. There are different cultures, different ways of doing things, and history and pre-concieved ideas that make it much more complex than giving and recieving. Even the words helping, or co-operating, don't seem quite right.

After thinking about this delimma we have decided the field where we feel called to contribute is in International Development. This is not to say there is no need for helping in the States or Canada. It is just simply where we think we should work. So when we are finished our work in Japan we hope to get started doing some development work in country where we can contribue positively..
